Field Trip To The Landfill

We went on a field trip to the Salt Lake County Landfill and learned lots! We learned about the importance of recycling and disposing of trash appropriately. We got to watch the trash from today be compressed by the trucks. We also saw where the special items, like electronics, can be dropped off. We learned that 2 liter soda bottle will never decompose because it is made of plastic BUT if you recycle it the bottle can be turned into cotton type fibers which can be used to make things like felt, carpet and the inside of a winter coat.

Ask your child to tell you more of what they learned!
The trash you see here is track ONLY FROM TODAY.
At the end of the day the trash from that day gets buried.

Tool Day

Today was tool day, which is a day where parents can volunteer to come in and talk to classes about their jobs (and bring the "tools" for their job). My students got to hear from:

1. Delta flight attendant/ RN

2. Mechanical Engineers

3. KSL TV videographer/producer

4. Jetblue travel agent (Haley's mom)
The kids learned a lot about these careers and some of them seemed excited about them. To go along with Tool Day the students were encouraged to dress up as a career of their choice. I was impressed at how many of my students participated in this. I want to thank all the parents that were willing to come in and speak with our class. We had a great time!

Hoedown

On Thursday we had a hoedown at school. Many of the kids came dressed in country attire ready to have some fun. They were a bit nervous going into the hoedown because they were going to be dancing with a partner, but after the Hoedown the kids were talking about how much fun they had. They said it wasn't nearly as bad dancing with a partner as they thought it would be.

Shout Out

I have to give a shout out to all my wonderful students and parents! I felt very appreciated and cared for today when a couple moms came in with flowers and birthday cake to help celebrate my birthday. I know many of you moms donated to this and I want to THANK YOU! I feel very blessed to have the students that I have this year, and the parents of my students are AWESOME too!

Geometry

We have just completed our Geometry lesson. It was a nice break from our multiplication and division. We enjoyed using pattern blocks as we discovered the various attributes of each shape. We are now moving into our fractions unit. Please continue to help your child with their multiplication/division facts. It's very important that they know their facts because this will help them be more successful with fractions.

Battle of the Book

Some of my students chose to participate in the extra-curricular activity, Battle of the Books.  This is a fun event, but also requires some extra effort on the students part.  They were given a list of books at the beginning of the year, and put in groups of 3 or 4. Within their groups they divided the books up and spent the year reading these books. They would meet with their groups every so often, outside of school, to study, read, come up with a cheer, and quiz each other.

Last week was the actual "Battle of the Books." The kids spent the day with the other 3rd and 4th graders who also chose to participate. They had different rounds of competitions as well as a PE activity and lunch. They were treated to a pizza party, which the kids loved.

I was so proud of our 3rd graders! They worked so hard throughout the year. The three top teams, that competed in the final round, were made up of all 3rd graders! Good job! Also, thanks to all the parents that helped throughout the year, as well as during the actual event. It couldn't have been done without you!

Valentine's Day

We had a great time on Valentine's Day. We did some educational activities in the morning, that went along with the Valentine's Day theme. Then in the afternoon we had our party. Mrs. Edwards did a great job organizing and planning it all. We played some fun games, passed out our Valentines and enjoyed a wide selection of fruits and veggies.
